It's an interesting question: how much of civilization could you rebuild by yourself?

Answer: <a href="http://www.topatoco.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=TO&Product_Code=QW-CHEATSHEET&Category_Code=QW" rel="nofollow">this shirt</a> might help. :-)

Thanks for the comment, Lelden!

One of my friends and I had a similar discussion years ago (like ten now). The idea was if you had to restart civilization how far do you think you could get in your lifetime? And this was you as an individual, not you as one of many individuals in a group.

I think we (totally unscientifically) reasoned we probably could get to basic - maybe light-intermediate - metallurgy in one lifetime from scratch using only memory and what we know. I'm no longer sure of if one could even get that far. The idea however is similar to the post - but not how much of a single piece of technology does any man know, but how far up our technological tree could we tinker and get to in one lifetime.

If you were the sole inheritor of the memory of modern civilization after you were gone all the world of plastics and electronics and space would be reduced to legends among what little technology you could build to. The rest would be tales for the future generations - the ideas of myth.

Our society is so far into 'technology' that we loose the wonder of it. It is inefficient for someone to become a master of even one item like the pencil or computer mouse and know everything about how to make it, so it is easy to loose the big wonder even everyday products like those have.
